Adventure in paradise

On June 13th four Geelong-based swimmers journeyed to the warmer climes of Vanuatu essentially to compete in a couple of ocean swims.

The first swim was a 3.2km jaunt around Iririki Island Port Vila (photo top right). The second swim on the island of Espiritu Santo, although a tad shorter at 2.6km, was supposed to be tougher as it's across an exposed channel.

However we lucked out with ideal conditions for the first time in 3 years, and (allowing for the current) the Santo swim was pretty straight forward.

Here's a sample of the photos taken. There's more photos in the Gallery (link on navigation bar above). Click on an image below to see an enlarged version.

Tim Gates from Fairhaven (shown on the left) finished third in the 50-59 age group in the 3.2km swim around Iririki Island and then 3 days later won his age group in the Santo swim.

Tim is a regular in the Lorne Pier to Pub swim and his trip to Vanuatu was won in a raffle for those swimmers who had done 20 or more Lorne swims.

Andrew Beato and Shelley Clark were clear winners in both swims.

Andrew covered the 3.2km around Iririki in a record 36 minutes, and the 2.6km Santo Channel swim in 27minutes.

Both Andrew's times were records and will take some beating, particularly the Santo swim which was run in ideal conditions for the first time.
